The UK's first and only injured Serviceman's motorcycle race team, True Heroes Racing, has been publicly nominated for The Sun Military Awards, which will celebrate Britain's Armed Forces, at a ceremony in London this evening.
True Heroes Racing has been competing in the MCE Insurance British Superbike Championship support classes for two seasons with double amputee Murray Hambro and a team of injured service personnel. The team will attend tonight's Awards ceremony to celebrate the achievements of their unique set-up.
The team's longest-standing rider, Hambro said: "It's a real honour for the team to have been recognised through the Millies nomination. It's made particularly special to find out this nomination has come from the general public, who have supported True Heroes Racing since its formation. Being a part of this team has given everyone a real focus in our lives and enabled us to achieve new goals we didn't think possible. I've personally worked hard on my health and fitness, as well as developing skills and qualifications that could help me to get employment outside the military. I also hope the goals I've achieved with the team have inspired others to believe anything is possible."
Team Manager Phil Spencer commented: "When I was first contacted by The Sun to be told of our nomination I was stunned, and then to be informed that the team was nominated by the public has made this nomination extra special. For the public to feel so strongly about what True Heroes Racing is achieving is truly humbling. I believe our MCE BSB fan base have been instrumental in the team's nomination for this award.
"True Heroes Racing could not have grown to where it is now without the support of many people; from race fans and supporters, to team sponsors and championship organisers and we thank them all. I really hope this nomination will help continue the growth of the team, offering more opportunities for injured Service personnel, but also inspiring others to go out and achieve the things they never thought possible."
The Millies will be screened on Thursday 18 December at 8:30pm on ITV1.
