The British Superbike Championship received a rapturous reception at the 'Big Brands Bash' last weekend (17/18/19 July) as 55,000 fans descended on Brands Hatch for the annual summer event with the biggest crowd in several seasons lining the circuit.
The huge crowd were treated to some spectacular action from BSB and the supporting classes as Shane 'Shakey' Byrne secured pole by the closest possible margin - just 0.001s on Saturday. However on race day his fierce title rival Josh Brookes was the BSB Monster Energy King of Brands after his double win from the two dramatic races - his first for the Milwaukee Yamaha team this year.
James Ellison and Richard Cooper shared the podium spoils, along with Byrne, who bounced back from a huge 120mph crash in the opening race to claim second place in race two. John Hopkins made his much-anticipated return to the series at Brands Hatch by scoring Ducati their best result to date for the Panigale in sixth place with the Lloyds British Moto Rapido team.
The Brands Hatch event now sets the stage for the fastest round of the season coming up in less than two weeks' time (31 July - 1/2 August) at Thruxton for the JG Speedfit round, followed by the 'Party in the Park' as the contenders battle it out to become the Monster Energy King of the Mountain.
Series Director Stuart Higgs commented: "Last weekend proved that Brands Hatch remains the home of the big summer Superbike event with 55,000 fans visiting the track for the racing, live music and atmosphere. We now move into the second half of the season with huge anticipation - Thruxton always delivers some of the closest races of the season followed by Cadwell Park and the annual 'Party in the Park'. Those rounds will prove crucial to the championship and will make or break a rider and team's position ahead of the Showdown. There will certainly be all to play for as we arrive at Oulton Park in September for the triple-header round that will ultimately decide the six Title Fighters!"
